Using federal rule text

Works created by U.S. federal government employees as part of their official duties are not subject to copyright in the United States (17 U.S.C. § 105). The Office of the Federal Register also states that any person may reproduce or republish material from the Federal Register, with no restriction on what is reproduced, who reproduces it or where (1 CFR 2.6). We quote rule text word for word and still link to each source and show the date we checked it, so you can read the original.

The eCFR, where our quotes come from, is described by the Office of the Federal Register as "authoritative but unofficial". The official sources are the annual Code of Federal Regulations, the daily Federal Register and the List of CFR Sections Affected. Each of our quotes names the date of the eCFR text it was checked against. Rules can change after that date, so for legal or compliance decisions check the official edition; see the Office of the Federal Register's About This Site page and our disclaimer.

State manuals and private certifying bodies' materials can be protected by copyright. For those we link to the official document and summarize it in our own words; we do not copy their text or questions.

What we do not use

  • Text, questions or page structure from other prep sites, books or courses.
  • Real exam questions from any testing organization or certifying body.
  • Standards text that is protected by copyright. Where a rule refers to an industry standard, we name it and link to the rule rather than reproduce the standard.

Trademarks

Certification and organization names belong to their owners and are used only to identify the exam or source we describe. goraedu is not affiliated with or endorsed by any government agency or certifying organization, and we do not use any agency's or organization's logo or seal.
